As a peaceful warrior, I would choose when, where and how I would behave.
With that commitment, I began to live the life of a warrior.

Self-Body Scan
Blessing Our Bodies

As the living vehicles for our spirits, our bodies deserve loving attention and care. We can positively affect our health, prevent illness, and heal injuries by regularly focusing our mental and spiritual energy on the workings of our bodies. This can be done by performing a body scan on yourself.

Begin by lying in a comfortable position and taking three deep cleansing breaths. Imagine, if you will, a sunbeam entering the top of your head. Feel this light slowly scanning each part of your internal body. Allow it to scan every cell in your body and keep breathing. Every time you exhale, blow out negative energy you may feel. Notice any changes in your body. Sensations may vary from person to person. You may feel a shift in body temperature, see a color or flash of light, or hear a voice offering you guidance. If you feel a block in a certain area of your body, sit with that block and feel into it. Ask your body why that block is there and what you need to do to release it. Try not to judge or analyze the wisdom that comes to you. Often, we experience energy blocks in our body because our body is trying to tell us something. You may want to breathe into that area until you feel the block dissolving. When you have finished your scan, take one last deep breath and exhale any energetic residue that you are ready to release.

The body doesn’t lie, and it has much wisdom to share with us. Any injuries or blocks that exist in our bodies are there so that we can learn from having them in our bodies. An existing injury can teach us to slow down or help us recognize that something is out of balance in our bodies. The more you scan your body, the better you will become at it. If you sense that something is not right in your body, you may want to visit your health care practitioner and tell them about your experience.

When you have finished your scan, don’t forget to thank your wonderful, amazing body.

A great OM for today! ~j

Who me, headstrong? How about you?

Both full and new moon days are observed as yoga holidays in the Ashtanga Yoga tradition.

Like all things of a watery nature (human beings are about 70% water), we are affected by the phases of the moon. The phases of the moon are determined by the moon’s relative position to the sun. Full moons occur when they are in opposition and new moons when they are in conjunction. Both sun and moon exert a gravitational pull on the earth. Their relative positions create different energetic experiences that can be compared to the breath cycle. The full moon energy corresponds to the end of inhalation when the force of prana is greatest. This is an expansive, upward moving force that makes us feel energetic and emotional, but not well grounded. The Upanishads state that the main prana lives in the head. During the full moon we tend to be more headstrong.

The new moon energy corresponds to the end of exhalation when the force of apana is greatest. Apana is a contracting, downward moving force that makes us feel calm and grounded, but dense and disinclined towards physical exertion.

Well after a full year or so of practicing yoga, I was a little surprised to find that the practice varies greatly depending on your choice of studio, mentor and system. So these last couple of years I have gone on an exploration out of the physical and into the mental/emotional.

I often find that the new moon days are the days that I want to get everything done. Make up for the things that didn't get done last week and get a jump start on those things coming up. A good sign that I could use some time to find the quiet within.

Following the moon cycles makes perfect sense. Many things in nature do. So taking a break, which was not always in my schedule became one of the most challenging 'poses' for me. The practice of Asthanga Yoga is quite involved and requires a discipline that can present challenges. Yoga is not just about the physical, this is only one of 8 pieces of the puzzle. Many religions talk of similar principles in their language and while I do not believe that yoga is a religion, I do find that it can support your beliefs and ground you in those foundational precepts, whatever your religion is.

Ashtanga yoga literally means "eight-limbed yoga," as outlined by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. According to Patanjali, the path of internal purification for revealing the Universal Self consists of the following eight spiritual practices:

Yama [moral codes]
Niyama [self-purification and study]
Asana [posture]
Pranayama [breath control]
Pratyahara [sense control]
Dharana [concentration]
Dhyana [meditation]
Samadhi [contemplation]

The first four limbs—yama, niyama, asana, pranayama—are considered external cleansing practices.

"The purpose of vinyasa is for internal cleansing" ("Ashtanga Yoga"). Synchronizing breathing and movement in the asanas heats the blood, cleaning and thinning it so that it may circulate more freely. Improved blood circulation relieves joint pain and removes toxins and disease from the internal organs. The sweat generated from the heat of vinyasa then carries the impurities out of the body. Through the use of vinyasa, the body becomes healthy, light and strong.

Tristhana refers to the union of "three places of attention or action: posture, breathing system and looking place. These three are very important for yoga practice, and cover three levels of purification: the body, nervous system and mind. They are always performed in conjunction with each other"

Yoga is a fascinating practice and when brought along side the rough and tumble that we have created for ourselves it can be a beautiful source of restoration and revitalization. Observing the cycles of nature and closing the door to the schedule and the chaos, finding a day for renewal can bring a welcome balance into your life.

In breath and balance. ~j

How did your city do? Not looking too good here in sunny SD.
Whew! Are you the anomaly? Rock on! Being the example is a unique path to take, for your family and loved ones, for those who think that they can't but really can, for your circle of influence.

If not, take notice. Take a few of your own measurements. Whether it be on a scale, blood work, tape measure, body composition. Own it.

Then make a conscious choice, are you good, maybe just looking for a tweak her or there, could you use a little kick in the pants or do you need some serious guidance. Everyone will have different interests, tastes and goals. Find the ones that make you smile, give you a reason to get it done.

You should be the one, the individual, the one with the control, who is healthy and happy. Wherever you reside, keep it real, keep it simple, stay aware, take care of yourself.

If you are going to be a statistic, at least be a good one! ~j

Every cell pulsates, absorbs, reflects and interacts with the acoustic oscillations of the medium. - Guiliana Conforto
*
Wow! Yesterday I had the pleasure of visiting Diane Mandle of Sound Energy Healing. What a beautiful experience.
*
It is quite a challenge to explain, but begin by thinking, no electronics...this was an experience of sound and vibration using Tibetan Bowls and Gongs. It was amazing.
*
Diane is a certified practitioner and uses hand selected, authentic instruments. The sounds that surround you in this experience are far reaching.
*
I was able to relax into a place that was far from my daily life. The reasons to visit a practitioner such as Diane span the list from pain management to stress reduction and everything in between. SoundEnergyHealing.com
*
It is really about putting you mind in a place where you remember that you are a smaller part of something much greater and you are a greater part of those things that surround you. We aren't always just, mom, dad, spouse, worker bee, boss, athlete, friend, business associate etc. We came into this world free of labels and expectation. It is up to us to create the life that we claim as our own...whether we are aware and are living in love and service or are disconnected from divine light, living in the dark and have found our own brand of misery. Sound impacts our physical cellular structure, perspective and actions or reactions. At the core of our essence we are vibrational beings. All things around us vibrate energetically, remember E=MC2. I love the quantum thing, very cool and spectacular. When there is interference of our signals, we tend to get off the grid and a breakdown can occur, especially if we can no longer course correct. Clarity of mind, body and spirit bring us back into balance. The opportunity to recognize what this is for each one of us individually is a gift.
*
When you are looking for a moment of peace in this world of ''doing' it is well worth a time out for your 'being' to enjoy the beautiful sounds of these sacred sounds.

Observant And Aware

Today you may be feeling observant. As you find yourself paying close attention to your surroundings, you may feel connected and aware. You could feel that you’ve tapped into the flow of energy around you, which could give you a sense of alertness. When we realize that we are one and connected with everything around us, we may feel a surge of recognition and the joy of celebration all at once. We may notice scents that we hadn’t before, and feel the breeze with every inch of exposed skin. You may see life around you that had gone unnoticed—the birds, insects, and subtle movement of the plants—all in harmony with the sun and the air and the earth. You can carry this awareness to the people around you, whether you know them or not, and sense their energy as well. Today by consciously observing the fullness of life around you, you connect to its constant flow of energy which enlivens you.

Sometimes we get so involved in our thoughts that the world goes by us unseen and unheard. We may not pay any attention to the rhythm of life around us until the sun catches us, suddenly blinding us, or the breeze scatters our papers and blows our hair in our faces. We can take this as the universe bringing us back to the present and the reality of life. Today your observance reminds you that you are part of a wide world and not alone, but connected.

Eyes and heart open! ~j

Emerald Apple Sauce

Parsley Parsley contains three times as much vitamin C as oranges, twice as much iron as spinach, is rich in vitamin A and contains folate, potassium and calcium. What’s more, parsley is also recognized for its cancer-fighting potential.

Source: http://health.learninginfo.org/parsley.htm

Blend well the following ingredients in the blender.
  • ½ bunch (or one cup) parsley (start with less if you are a little nervous, taste, adjust)
  • Two large apples of your choice
Yields 2 cups

Honestly gang, it is this simple :-) It looks a little strange at first but it is fantastic. I love to use mint also, not nearly as much though.

Check out the The Best Green Smoothie Ever...many of you who know me know that I am a stickler for the simplicity of the green smoothie, Serge explains it very well. I promise, it is not rocket science and doesn't have to be. So, save all the starches and mondo combos for another time. Relax and get your favorite glass.

Cheers to life! Here's to every little cell that makes it possible. ~j

It is the divine vitality that everywhere produces and restores life.
To each and every one of us, it gives the power of working miracles if we will.
~LM Child

I just love this...can you see it? Can you touch it? It's right there. You have to take a quiet moment and know. Quiet the mind so that you can hear above the chatter. See above the chaos that we live in constantly.

A friend of mine challenged me last year at this time to the 20/20/20...and yes, it was a challenge. Far greater than any physical training or logical thinking.

Here is how it works:

Take the time every day, preferably upon waking...
  • 20 minutes of yoga, flow or stretching -to get your circulation and energy flowing
  • 20 minutes of meditation or manta (repeating a prayer over and over or phrase or whatever is part of your spiritual practice) - to let the mind be free of the 10,000 things that it will think of for the rest of the day
  • 20 minutes of journaling - to open the channel for communication with...your higher self, God, your source, avatar etc. mainly, being aware.
Okay, so that's it...somedays it is 10/10/10 or some variation of that, but WOW. Take the challenge, 30 days. What have you got to lose?? In Om ~ j

Going Deep
Self-Examination at Depth

There are times when life urges us to seek more. Small changes to our comfort zone may fail to alleviate any sense of stagnancy or frustration, and we may need to examine our lives and ourselves more deeply to find the right place to start. Everything we need for success and joy lies within. But so often, life’s debris accumulates, building layers around our core that makes it difficult to access the truth that resides within. To reach the depth we wish to access, we must dive below these layers to the deepest parts of ourselves.

The first layer can be found in our minds. Our to-do lists and busy work are usually less important than we think, so we must look past them to examine the thoughts that matter most to us. The next layer can be found in our hearts, where past hurts and disappointments can sometimes cover up our vulnerabilities, as well as the truth of who and what really stirs the love within us. We can choose to go even deeper – to our center. If we can go beyond anything has affected us to the point that it blocks us at the gut level, we can reconnect with our power, our raw instincts, our organic yeses. Here, at the core, lies our truth. Our core is our foundation that supports us and what we’d like to build our authentic life upon.

When we examine ourselves to these depths, we are able to find what we wish to bring to the surface and what we wish to let go. When we remember what lies beneath our layers, we can look at what was floating on the surface, causing blocks and pains, and understand the purpose that they served. Oftentimes, it is the built up debris that causes us to go deeper, so we can search for the truth. Go deep, live life from your truth within, and watch your innate beauty manifest outward.

To living life! ~j

Five Actions
Panchakarma

"Panchakarma," a sanskrit word meaning "five actions," describes a series of gentle, natural therapies that boost the body’s ability to detoxify and rejuvenate। As an essential part of Ayurveda, India’s ancient holistic system of medicine, it is used to maintain the body’s balance to prevent illness or as the first step in holistic treatment. Panchakarma’s incredible purification improves healing throughout the body, mind, and spirit, clearing the way for the body’s healing intelligence to flow freely.

Today, an oil massage, steam baths, and a special diet prepare your body for several days of relaxing, healing therapies at a spa-like medical clinic। A precise sequence of soothing treatments is then applied in such a way that brainwaves are stimulated and synchronized, creating deep relaxation and an expanded state of consciousness। At the same time, herbal therapies help flush toxins from the body’s systems and tissues while massage soothes the body and balances its energy. Profoundly rejuvenating, Panchakarma can increase energy and mental clarity. It has even been known to slow the aging process and heal diseases previously thought to be incurable according to Western medicine.

Depending on the needs of the particular individual, a series of five basic therapies are used: Vaman purges toxins from the sinuses, lungs, and stomach; Virechan flushes toxins from the small intestine; Vasti removes toxins from the colon; Nasyam is herbal therapy applied through the nose for head and sinus conditions. The fifth therapy can be one of three methods: Rakta Moksham removes the excess toxins in the bloodstream, while Shiro Dhara uses a hot-oil head massage. A second form of Vasti can also be applied. Along with a relief of symptoms and improvements in physical disorders, many people, after experiencing Panchakarma, feel lighter, more energized, and look younger. The body’s ability to heal itself is deeply enhanced with the techniques of Panchakarma. By embracing its methods, we eliminate obstacles to complete balance in our bodies and allow the powerful flow of our healing energy to restore our health, our natural glow, and our zest for life.

Awakening to Change
Being Aware is the First Step
Life is a journey comprised of many steps on our personal path that takes us down a winding road of constant evolution. And each day, we are provided with a myriad of opportunities that can allow us to transform into our next best selves. One moment we are presented with an opportunity to react differently when yet another someone in our life rubs us the wrong way; on another day we may find ourselves wanting to walk away from a particular circumstance but are not sure if we can. Eventually, we may find ourselves stuck in a rut that we can never seem to get out of. We may even make the same choices over and over again because we don’t know how to choose otherwise. Rather than moving us forward, our personal paths may take us in a seemingly never-ending circle where our actions and choices lead us nowhere but to where we’ve already been. It is during these moments that awareness can be the first step to change.

Awareness is when we are able to realize what we are doing. We observe ourselves, noticing our reactions, actions, and choices as if we were a detached viewer. Awareness is the first step to change because we can’t make a change unless we are aware that one needs to be made in the first place. We can then begin understanding why we are doing what we are doing. Afterward, it becomes difficult not to change because we are no longer asleep to the truth behind our behaviors. We also begin to realize that, just as much as we are the root source behind the causes for our behaviors, we are also the originator for any changes that we want to happen.

There is a freedom that comes with awareness. Rather than thinking that we are stuck in a repetitive cycle where there is no escape, we begin to see that we very much play a hand in creating our lives. Whether we are aware of them or not, our behaviors and choices are always ours to make. Our past and our present no longer have to dictate our future when we choose to be aware. We are then free to move beyond our old limits, make new choices, and take new actions. With awareness, our paths can’t help but wind us forward in our lives while paving the way for new experiences and new ways of being. It is through awareness that we can continue to consciously evolve.

Doing Our Best Work
Roles of Support

In the great symphony of life, we all have important parts to play. While some people are best suited to be conductors or soloists, their contributions would be diminished considerably without the individual musicians that lend their artistry to the fullness of an orchestra. The magical accents of the percussion section might sound random and out of place without the music they accompany. But any one member of an orchestra, doing less than their best at their particular part, can destroy the harmony of the whole piece, such is their importance. So although we may not receive the same amount or quality of attention as another, all of our contributions are valuable and integral to the success of the whole.

When we do our tasks well, we infuse them with our unique energy, making each act a gift. Each of our personalities and talents are suited to different roles of support. Even leaders and star performers support others in their own way. We can look around us at any moment to see that while we nurture some people with our work, others are supporting us with their gifts. Doing any job from this place within us allows us to do our part with humility and gratitude, while also learning lessons that move us steadily toward our goals.

When we can be fully present in every job that we do, we bring the fullness of our bodies, minds and spirits to the moment. Our contribution is enhanced by the infusion of our talents and abilities, and when we give them willingly, they attract the right people and circumstances into our experience. Anything we do begrudgingly limits the flow of our energy and closes us off from the good that is available to us in every situation. But by giving the best in us to make the world around us better, we open ourselves to receive the best from the universe in return.

Life As We Know It
The Status Quo
When our lives are going well, and sometimes even when they aren’t, we may find ourselves feeling very attached to the status quo of our existence--life as we know it. It is a very human tendency to resist change as though it were possible to simply decide not to do it, or have it in our lives. But change will come and the status quo will go, sooner or later, with our consent or without it. We may find at the end of the day that we feel considerably more empowered when we find the courage to ally ourselves with the universal force of change, rather than working against it.

Of course, the answer is not to go about changing things at random, without regard to whether they are working or not. There is a time and place for stability and the preservation of what has been gained over time. In fact, the ability to stabilize and preserve what is serving us is part of what helps us to survive and thrive. The problem comes when we become more attached to preserving the status quo than to honoring the universal givens of growth and change. For example, if we allow a situation we are in to remain stagnant simply because we are comfortable, it may be time for us to summon up the courage to challenge the status quo.

This may be painful at times, or surprisingly liberating, and it will most likely be a little of both. Underneath the discomfort, we will probably find excitement and energy as we take the risk of unblocking the natural flow of energy in our lives. It is like dismantling a dam inside ourselves, because most of the work involves clearing our own inner obstacles so that the river of our life can flow unobstructed. Once we remove the obstacles, we can simply go with the flow, trusting the changes that follow.

Learning To Trust Divine Guidance
Trial And Error

Anyone who has asked for divine guidance knows that it can be challenging to trust it when it comes. This is because divine guidance comes in many forms and it is sometimes hard to locate it. We aren’t sure if we are meant to trust our thoughts, our feelings, our dreams, or our intuitions to be the carriers of divine wisdom. We are not sure if advice from a friend is the form in which the guidance has come into the world, or if our own opinion is the source of wisdom we need to take seriously.

The ability to sort all this out comes with trial and error, and the best way to learn to recognize divine guidance is to engage in the process of asking and receiving. Sometimes when we ask for guidance, we already have a sense of what we want to hear. At such times, receiving guidance can be difficult, because we don’t want to hear anything that appears to be in opposition to our desire. Therefore, one of the most important qualities we need to cultivate if we are to receive guidance is an open mind. It helps to acknowledge what we want, and then to symbolically set it aside, making room for whatever wisdom comes through to us. Cultivating an active relationship with the divine is the essential ingredient to being able to receive and trust guidance when it comes our way.

We can make a daily practice of this in many ways. We can also use our journals, developing a relationship with the divine through the written word. As we request and receive guidance, we might take notes on our experiences. Over time we will begin to recognize when we were able to hear correctly and when we were not. In this way, we will gradually attune ourselves to our particular relationship with the divine. Begin to trust the guidance you are receiving and soon you will find it flowing with ease.

What I am doing today is important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it. ~Unknown

A few tidbits of inspiration as we wind down the year! ~j

**
When your to-do list gets overwhelming, there's a natural way to figure out your next step. Tune into this gentle process.
By Jennifer Louden

It's mid-morning, and several minor crises have already derailed you. Your plan for the day is in shambles, your to-do list feels like a boulder around your neck, and all you want to do is hide. You’re reaching for a diet Coke or more coffee in the hopes that it will give you the energy to decide which item on your list to tackle. Then you remember that there’s another way. You make the choice.

You feel your feet connecting with the ground beneath you. You take a deep breath and reach your arms overhead, exhaling with a huge sigh. You put your hand on your heart and recall feeling balanced and flowing, trusting the flow of life. You gently ask, "What choice feels the easiest in this moment?" You visualize yourself bringing this question into your heart, and take a breath or two to infuse it with flow and peace. Perhaps a brief image of your sister comes to mind. Or maybe you hear a refrain of an old song, and when you focus on it, you realize it reminds you of your sister. Or perhaps you remember the feeling of your sister hugging you. You call your sister, have a lovely chat, and when you get off the phone, you have new energy —enough to move you forward to the next task awaiting you.

Faith is connected to hope and hope means believing in spite of the evidence and then watching the evidence change.

Do you begin to see to get the picture of how this approach flows with life? I’m not proposing you sell your worldly possessions and move to the woods to live in an unheated yurt. I’m not recommending you consult crystals or the I Ching before moving a muscle. What I am saying is that when you think you’re lost, overwhelmed, and without direction, you do “know” what to do to restore your balance and your direction–but it’s a different kind of knowing, one you already possess, and need only be reminded of how to access.

This is part of the process I call "Life Organizing." It's infinitely richer than plotting your days in 15-minute increments in your day planner, but it does require trusting your own experiences. It involves a quick in-the-moment check-in that lowers your stress while allowing you to move beyond your conscious mind and respond with creativity and intuition to challenges and opportunities. Here are some of the check-in steps from the example above:

1. Connect: Move your body – breathe deeper, stretch your arms overhead, step outside and feel the breeze on your skin- anything that connects you with your life energy.

2. Feel: Tune into your heart, which can give you information your head can’t. Simply put your attention on your heart, perhaps by placing your hand there. Recall a time in which you felt loved and appreciated or loving and appreciative toward someone else. Linger there for a few seconds.

3. Inquire: Ask a mindful question. This opens up possibilities you literally couldn’t see before. In the first example, the mindful question was: What choice feels the easiest in this moment? Another of my favorite questions: What do I need to know right now?

4. Allow: To allow is simply trusting that by connecting, feeling, and inquiring, you will hear or see or feel or sense what your next step is—and only your next step.. Allowing is not about belief: it’s about noticing your experience and opening to your next step, allowing love, inspiration, and knowing to come into your body and heart, to inform and direct you.

On Self Knowledge ~Kahlil Gibran

And a man said, Speak to us of Self-Knowledge.

And he answered, saying:
Your hearts know in silence the secrets of the days and the nights.
But your ears thirst for the sound of your heart's knowledge.
You would know in words that which you have always known in thought.
You would touch with your fingers the naked body of your dreams.

And it is well you should.
The hidden well-spring of your soul must needs
rise and run murmuring to the sea;
And the treasure of your infinite depths
would be revealed to your eyes.
But let there be no scales to weigh your unknown treasure;
And seek not the depths of your knowledge
with staff or sounding line.
For self is a sea boundless and measureless.

Say not, "I have found the truth"
but rather, "I have found a truth."
Say not, "I have found the path of the soul."
Say rather, "I have met the soul walking upon my path."
For the soul walks upon all paths.
The soul walks not upon a line, neither does it grow like a reed.
The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of countless petals.

Thanks Jeff for reminding me that sometimes the message is not about me! We are all connected at a very deep level. Busy or not, there is always a little time for sharing. I value and enjoy that those of you who do drop in just might be on the same page that I am today. Thanks!
*
With the busy-ness of the season upon us, it is an incredible time hear that you would know in words that which you have always known in thought. How often do you find yourself completely wrapped up in your head. For me it is usually while I am driving and then, once the destination has been reached, poof. I feel like Chicken Little, 'what were we talking about again?'!
*
Roaming unencumbered in the place inside that is free, fearless, creative and soulful, honestly I find it magical. This time of year often brings emotions and memories from years gone by, or reflection upon our dreams and aspirations of the future. Don't let them slip back into the depths! Allow those petals to unfold even if just a little. Reveal a little more of your soul today, if not to the world, to yourself!
*
And smile, you are on your path! ~j

"It is the Law that any difficulties that can come to you at any time,
no matter what they are,
must be exactly what you need most at the moment,
to enable you to take the next step forward by overcoming them.
*
The only real misfortune, the only real tragedy,
comes when we suffer without learning the lesson."
~ Emmet Fox

Thank you, thank you for your emails and notes. Things are a little busy these days and as fun as this is...have to take a break!
